ZZK and Life Update
November 13th, 2009
Cool Article on CC about Nueve Cumbia, or as they refer to it Cumbia Digitale
I posted last week that Bomba Estereo was playing in town. Oh man what a great show. Those of you who didn’t go (surprise, that was all of you) totally missed out. Before they started the Doug Fir was fairly empty, just people sitting around the outside. But as soon as they got done with their intro song, the whole dance floor filled up. There must have been Colombians crawling out from between the log cabin walls, because everybody was having a great time and most people were speaking Spanish. But the rhythms were super danceable, the signer was adorable and full or energy and the band had a great modern electro rock sound on top of their cumbia roots. I’m gald the default portland crowd didn’t show up, cus they would have made it suck with bad outfits, head bobbing/bad dancing and mean mugging.
Now for the life update part (the ul/li version):
- I met a girl
- lives in mexico
- I’m pseudo moving until april ‘10
- Taking the dog
- Keeping the apt

- Buenos Aires

New Nathan McKee Track
August 18th, 2009
Nathan Mckee hadn’t played live since he moved to NYC. He played with the Stellar Bros at Home Sweet Home in Manhattan on July 31. Download a live track from the show, How Did We Get Here?. Originally posted here
Speaking of friends in NYC, Cale Parks just had a new track posted on RCDLDB. Its a really nice floaty rhythmic example of his style.
Nueva Cumbia: What I've Been Listening To
July 1st, 2009
Zizek Urban Beats Club from Whats Up Buenos Aires on Vimeo.
While I was in South America I found out about Cumbia, the dominate style of music in most Latin countries. There are a lot of different styles of cumbia. Before I even went to Buenos Aires I had been listening to El Remolon, but I didn’t even know that he was making Nueva Cumbia. I was stoked when i got to see him in in BsAs and have been hunting down lots of other artists and producers like him. A lot of the scene in Buenos Aires seams to centered around ZZK records. Which is ran by Villa Diamante, read an interview with him over here on Generation Bass. Villa just released Empacho Digital, a crazy 3 disc Nueva Cumbia mashup disc, with what he says is “a consequence of all the music that has ever come out of my speakers”. But for the cumbia n00b start out buy getting ZZK Sound Vol. 1 and Vol. 2
Niggy Tardust's The Tar Spangled Banner Tour
January 29th, 2008
Poet/writer, actor and musician Saul Williams has just announced tour dates for his most recent project Niggy Tardust. Williams followed the Radiohead business model with Niggy Tardust, making it available for free download. Two lucky community colleges in Phoenix will get to see him do spoken word, but miss out on his musical performance.
